Setting VteTerminalEraseBinding to VTE_ERASE_ASCII_DELETE will resolve
the problem.
Thanks to Tetralet <tetralet AT gmail DOT com> for the information.

In evilvte, you may #define BACKSPACE_KEY DELETE,
which will use VTE_ERASE_ASCII_DELETE as VteTerminalEraseBinding.

I have used VTE_ERASE_ASCII_DELETE for about 3 weeks,
and does not find any adverse consequence.

I think it is safe to close this bug once the new upload set
VteTerminalEraseBinding to VTE_ERASE_ASCII_DELETE.

I will provide a hotkey or a menu to toggle it in 0.4.5
(as upstream author),
but I hope I can push 0.4.4-1 to Sid before the 0.4.5 release. :-)

Kind regards
 Wen-Yen Chuang (caleb)
