I installed synce-hal from unstable (0.13.1-2). Following the README in
the source bluetooth folder, I copied from the source package the
appropriate synce-bt-* files in /etc/ppp/ip-down.d ; /etc/ppp/ip-up.d ;
/etc/ppp/peers. What permissions should I give to these files? I tried
to respect those of other files already present there. I also created
links named synce-bt, because I am not sure of the exact names these
files are supposed to be given. Please see listing at the end of the
post and tell me if something is wrong there.

I discovered, after having done the above, the existence of a
synce-hal-bluetooth package in unstable
[http://packages.debian.org/sid/synce-hal-bluetooth], but it is
currently uninstallable AFAIU (bluez-compat is unavailable).

Then I ran dund as suggested, in root. Can I run it as a normal user
instead?
1-20h32-/etc/ppp#dund --listen --activesync --msdun call synce-bt-peer
 1-20h33-/etc/ppp#tail -n 1 /var/log/syslog
Apr 5 20:32:30 smg8 dund[6147]: Bluetooth DUN daemon version 3.36

I added the sdp services as suggested, as a normal user. Should I add
them as root instead?
 2-20h34-/etc/ppp/ip-up.d$sdptool add activesync
 ActiveSync service record registered
 2-20h34-/etc/ppp/ip-up.d$sdptool add dun
 Dial-Up Networking service registered
 2-20h34-/etc/ppp/ip-up.d$sdptool add sp
 Serial Port service registered

However, as I made several tries, these services appear more than once.
Should I remove the duplicates? (What about the Serial Port appearing
more than the DUN, e.g. ?)
2-20h37-/etc/ppp/ip-up.d$sdptool browse local | grep "Service Name: "
 Service Name: Headset Audio Gateway
 Service Name: Audio Source
 Service Name: AVRCP TG
 Service Name: AVRCP CT
 Service Name: ActiveSync
 Service Name: Serial Port
 Service Name: Serial Port
 Service Name: Microsoft ActiveSync
 Service Name: Dial-Up Networking
 Service Name: Serial Port
 Service Name: Microsoft ActiveSync
 Service Name: Dial-Up Networking
 Service Name: Serial Port

Then on my PPC, in the bluetooth manager, I select the wizard to add an
ActiveSync via Bluetooth connection. It browses the available computers
available and finds my computer (and an other one in the room, where
sync-hal is not installed). When I select my computer, it suggests me to
create a shortcut, and I don't check the box about a secure connexion. I
click on finish to launch the connection.

After a few seconds, the PPC tells me that a communication error
happened, communication is impossible with the desktop computer, try to
reconnect the PPC, blah blah (nothing useful). /var/log/syslog contains
the following entries.
 Apr 5 20:43:39 smg8 dund[6222]: New connection from 08:00:28:91:D3:2B

 Apr 5 20:44:48 smg8 pppd[6224]: Connection terminated.
 Apr 5 20:44:48 smg8 pppd[6224]: Exit.

Strangely enough, this communication process somehow interacts with my
fetchmail daemon, which was not supposed to terminate at that moment.

Later, when I killed dund, the log mentioned:
 Apr 5 21:12:15 smg8 dund[6147]: Accept failed. Interrupted system call(4)

I have not been able to use the synce-hal.conf file, I tried the
following (see below), but it does not seem to have an effect (or I
don't know where to find the log output).
 1-21h38-~#cat /etc/synce-hal/synce-hal.conf | grep -v "^#" | grep -v "^$"
 [general]
 loglevel: debug
 [serial]
 [rndis]

Thank you again for your help.
Olivier
