/var/{run,lock} are not really "kernfs"'s, but they are great ideas.
It would be good if the method would be generalised and I could use
the same infrastructure to mount tmpfs in other places too, to
support the creation of a read-only system.
Thus, I suggest to remove RAM{LOCK,RUN} from /etc/default/rcS and
instead introduce a file like /etc/tmpfs or similar with each line
either referencing a line in /etc/fstab, or specifying a mountpoint
and options, e.g.
/var/run rw,nosuid,mode=755
/var/lock rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec
then I could easily add /var/log or /etc/network/run to that file
and have tmpfs overlays available early during the boot, e.g.
S03mounttmpfs, which runs after 03mountkernfs.
