Hi, I needed to get this sorted out, so I had a couple of hours and re-installed the box, then applied exactly the same set of packages with precisely the same configuration ( /etc was restored ) - and the result is that the system is now fully operational, even with exactly the same kernel. Evidently "just one of those things" ...
