A little more digging led me to the source, msp3400.c source to be more specific. I found the opmode parameter and it seems that the stereo sound works immediately, if the mode is something else than "simpler". For some reason the mode is set to "simpler" automatically. So to work around the problem I insmod the msp3400 module with option opmode=1 (simple).
