I'm pretty sure too it's a kernel bug. I now it was introduced somewhere
around 2.6.26 (or 2.6.25, not sure). We're now running 2.6.24 on that
machine and all is fine. I don't know whether they fixed this in newer
kernels yet.

As it's been 4 or so months without any follow up, my personal feeling
is that this was probably a kernel bug that has since been fixed, and
nothing to do with hdparm.
I'm inclined to close this, but I'm willing to leave it open if you
think that you can reproduce it again.
