Hello, My system also hangs sometimes after the "Cleaning up ifupdown" message. This is displayed by ifupdown-clean, which mainly deletes a file, so the chance is little that it causes the hang. Moreover, if I press Ctrl-C, the following message appears: "Will now check all filesystems", which is displayed by checkfs. So I suspect that the problem is in the script that runs between them (the one I interrupt): module-init-tools.
