Yeah, indeed a good idea.  Didn't think about that.

Actually, in my case this first occured on a FAI'ed system.  Even
purging and installing the package from scratch did not install the
symlinks.

So I decided to check what happens when doing a manual installation
using Debian Installer.  I installed a 'Standard system' with tasksel,
then manually installed am-utils and got the same result: no
symlinks and, after a reboot, no amd process.

BTW: This bug also affects at least i386 systems.
