I have tried using strace with gnome-sound-properties.
When clicking on a sample sound, I see the following line:
connect(17, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path="/tmp/.esd-1000/socket"}, 23) = -1 EAGAIN
(Resource temporarily unavailable)

1000 is my user and the socket seems ok (777, owned by my user).

I see that esd also tries to connect via tcp to localhost, if launching
esd with -tcp, sound works again (not as it should, I can hear some
blanks in the sounds played), but esd seems to crash after a while.

Cheers,
Julien
