Are you sure you did that right? /dev/sequencer is used by sfxload (without the a), which is for OSS. When you're using ALSA, always use asfxload, not sfxload. Perhaps you could check whether there are hwdep devices under /dev/snd with your ALSA versions. If not, see whether "modprobe snd-hwdep" and such helps.
