Package: grep
Version: 2.5.3~dfsg-6
Severity: minor
The manpage for grep contains the following about the --color option:
--color[=WHEN], --colour[=WHEN]
Surround the matched (non-empty) strings, matching
lines,
context lines, file names, line numbers, byte
offsets, and
separators (for fields and groups of context lines) with
escape
sequences to display them in color on the terminal. The
colors
are defined by the environment variable
GREP_COLORS. The
deprecated environment variable GREP_COLOR is still
supported,
but its setting does not have priority. WHEN is never,
always,
or auto.
Nowhere does it explain what happens when the optional WHEN is not
specified. I had to dig in the source to figure it out: --color alone is
equivalent to --color=auto. It'd be much appreciated if a sentence
saying that could be added to the manpage
Thanks,
Christian
