Interestingly, this behavior only seems to occur with the old version 6.6 of xserver-xorg-video-ati, and not the current 6.9. (Unfortunately, 6.7+ do not work for me, so I'm permanently stuck at 6.6.)
Do feel free to close this bug, then.
