My guess is that those are some Unicode hyphen-like characters on your
command line, rather than ASCII hyphens "-" -- your mail suggests that
(my mailer will have mangled them in the quoted text) and I expect
puttygen will treat words starting with such characters as filenames
rather than options.

Are you pasting an example directly from the man page? If so, what
happens if you type the option dashes directly on your keyboard?

If this is the problem, the funny characters should be removed from the
examples on the man page (but that's not a Grave bug).
