In the experimental package, the Delete key still deletes the whole object. My new guess is that dia doesn't really distinguish between typing text and just selecting an object (i.e., I can type text when I just want to select the object), so it doesn't know whether I want to delete a character or the whole object. I.e., I now think this is a design bug, not a coding bug.
