The nethack-lisp package is built using a nethack-lisp patch (debian/patches/12_lisp_windowing.dpatch) whose changelog indicates it was current as of 2003-06-03. The nethack-el package, which provides the elisp frontend, has a changelog from 2005-02-27. It (both in the newer patch and in the elisp) includes features such as the "travel" command, not found in the nethack-lisp package, causing such features (exposed in the emacs UI) to fail when used against the nethack-lisp package.
