If you decide to go that way, please also document a way to do that on
a time basis (e.g. via cron assuming a given "expiration" delay for
.cow directories).

Nowadays machine are shutdown less and less often (laptops which only
go to sleep, and virtual machines which as far as the kernel is
concerned never reboot), so I won't be happy of having that performed
only at boot time.

Actually, I was even thinking of using tmpreaper to clean that dirs,
but as you observed it can be dangerous.
