        I think then the recommendation is to not do that. Don't compile
 the kernel sources in directories which have strange permissions.

        kernel-package should now at least prevent this particular bug
 from rearing its ugly head, but I don't know how many other issues
 might still be lurking. When they are reported, I'll try to squash
 them; but in general, the kernel-package documentations always suggests
 building in /usr/local/sompleace/you/control or even under $HOME.
