I was able to get the daemon working by setting

USER=openerp

in /etc/init.d/openerp-server

/etc/init.d/tinyerp-server used to have:

# Include tinyerp-server defaults
. /etc/default/tinyerp-server

and /etc/default/tinyerp-server had the line "USER=terp"

So, it seems this was overlooked in the newer release which does not include
an /etc/default config file.

"Personally, I liked the university. They gave us money and facilities, we
didn't have to produce anything! You've never been out of college! You don't
know what it's like out there! I've worked in the private sector. They expect
results." - Ray Stantz
