So I rebuilt for Lenny for at > http://people.debian.org/~bgoglin/rebuilds/radeonhd-1.2.4-Xserver1.4/ Thanks. I installed the amd64 non-debug flavor. It seems to behave the same. I noticed a few more things (probably same as before): In vt7 the power light on my monitor flashes and there doesn't appear to be any power to the monitor.
Although nothing is visible, kdm and X are running. That's consistent with the lack of fatal errors. FYI I had also installed fglrx-driver and related packages (no 3D stuff). These caused X to fail and print a backtrace. I removed them and the open source drivers seemed to get control back. I had never installed proprietary drivers at the time of my original bug report. > > If radeonhd fails, you should then try the radeon driver as well.
