My mistake. You are running an older version of ifrename. The one in the
unstable branch (27+28pre8-1) has an init script.

Apparently the hotplug maintainers added ifrename to the list of
programs that should be run when hardware gets detected. There have been
discussions in the past on when, how and where interfaces should be
renamed. The summary is: in the future hotplug will handle everything,
including renaming interfaces. In the mean time it calls ifrename. For
those people who do not wish to use hotplug, I already added an init
script that does that at boot time. If you are running unstable (etch),
just upgrade to the latest ifrename package. If you are running stable,
then create your own init script or install hotplug. Since this is not a
security problem, this will not be fixed in sarge.
