I wanted to report that I had very similar symptoms: xpdf 3.0-13 not displaying text in a pdf with type 1C and type 1 fonts, while ghostscript and acrobat reader rendered the same document fine. In my case, the problem went away when I noticed that /tmp was full, and cleaned it out. Hope this helps someone!
