It seems this problem is fixed/worked-around by a couple of patches in
the upstream git repository.
If anyone is interested, the tickets/0.24.x/961 branch (2 commits)
causes the connections to be closed before the exec happens. I think
the problem will return if keep_alive is ever re-enabled, but it fixes
it for now.
I can make unofficial packages available to anyone needing them.
