We may have tracked down the problem, see the above link for
updates.

Wrt, the actual bug related to the "other end went away" warning,
I give you the following IRC quotes with permission, and it seems as
if 0.24.8 will have the fix:

< jamesturnbull> madduck: the other end went away errors can generally be
ignored - the error should be trapped better but AFAIK the connection is retried
< jamesturnbull> I think that's the conclusion we reached after the last
trouble-shooting round table on this one
< madduck> jamesturnbull: so this "other end went away" warning can be degraded
to a notice or debug message such that it does not pollute syslog?
< jamesturnbull> madduck: it was supposed to be - that might have been m who
didn't - let me see if I can find any notes
< jamesturnbull> lak: you happy for the other end went away error to be
downgraded from Puppet.warning?
< jamesturnbull> lak: the connecton is recycled so I don't see why it's a
warning
< lak> jamesturnbull: sure

Thanks to James and Luke,
