I get the EOF error too, triggered by normal maths functions with real
arguments, e.g. exp(2), sin(2).

I do NOT get the error from 'x+x' if x is already defined (e.g. if x=5,
then x+x gives 10). I do get the error if I type x+x while x is still
undefined. Does that suggest that my error from the functions indicates
that those functions are not yet defined? Typing 'x(2)' (x undefined)
also triggers the error.

Referring to the EOF error mentioned in Bug#513853 ("fixed by dependency
on libiml0 >= 1.0.3"), I do have that version of libiml installed.

$ dpkg -l sagemath libiml0
ii  libiml0                              1.0.3-3
Integer Matrix Library, runtime files
ii  sagemath                             3.0.5dfsg-2
Mathematics software written in Python
