*Driver*
iwl3945

*Problem*
The physical button on the keyboard to enable/disable wi-fi doesn't work
properly.

case1: start with wireless ON -> button pressed -> wireless OFF -> button
pressed (again) -> nothing (wireless still OFF) (+ kernel oops) -> rmmod
iwl3945 & modprobe iwl3945 -> wireless ON

case2: start with wireless OFF -> button pressed -> wireless still OFF (+
kernel oops) -> rmmod iwl3945 & modprobe iwl3945 -> wireless ON

"modprobe iwl3945 debug=0x43fff" doesn't produce any additional useful output
on dmesg, even if I recompile the kernel with CONFIG_IWL3945_DEBUG=y.

Please see all the history of this bug report for more details:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=512255.

*Tests*
1) ubuntu (just to compare), linux 2.6.24: everything works
2) linux 2.6.26 (debian sources): problem described above
3) linux 2.6.26 (debian sources + latest compat wireless): OK!
4) linux 2.6.26.8 (vanilla): same problems
5) linux 2.6.26 (orig.tar.gz, taken from debian ftp): same problems
6) linux 2.6.28.4 (vanilla, latest stable): OK!

*Conclusions & solution*
It seems a problem affecting also upstream, but it solved with latest version
of the driver and/or kernel.
Looking and the date of the source code of compat-wireless_old I discovered
that the iwl3945 was modified the last time in the middle of September 2008,
then it can be considered well tested and so stable.

Could you update the iwl3945 driver with the "latest" (September 2008) provided
by compat-wireless_old?
http://wireless.kernel.org/download/compat-wireless-2.6/compat-wireless-old.tar.bz2
It should not be so difficult to do (but I'm not a kernel hacker and so I can't
be totally sure).

Another possibility is to provide an extra package with newer (and better)
drivers, but in my humble opinion it's more difficult to do and obviously not
so useful for upcoming lenny (release team won't accept new packages).

It's VERY annoying to do rmmod & modproble every time a person would like to
enable/disable wireless and, of course, it isn't absolutely a friendly approach
for a non-expert user.
I (and probably many other people with same wi-fi card) will be happier if you
update the driver, solving this bug.

Regards,
Alberto
