I've upgraded several machines now, and never hit the bug you're showing here, also I just debootstrapped Etch, installed spe, python2.5 and the other packages you've mentioned, and dist-upgraded to Lenny - no problem (except that aptitude is weird ;)) Therefore I'm downgrading the bug. In case you think that's not right, please show me how to reproduce it.
