I think I have found the culprit now: The "bug" occurs when "browser.display.focus_ring_on_anything" is set to "true" in about:config. When I switch it back to "false", Firefox behaves as expected. I think this is certainly bad, unexpected behaviour of that option, but it may be a different bug altogether (you decide). Thanks for helping.
