I still get this message.  I think someone here had mentioned a patch but I 
don't know how to apply it and I don't want to for each update.

debconf: unable to initialize frontend: Dialog
debconf: (TERM is not set, so the dialog frontend is not usable.)
debconf: falling back to frontend: Readline

I have an icon on my Gnome panel with this command:
/usr/bin/su-to-root -X -c /usr/sbin/synaptic

So could be that su-to-root makes the problem.
