Another update:

I've now tested linux-image-2.6.28-1-amd64, as well as a custom kernel
built from linux-source-2.6.28 (packages coming from the kernel
archive trunk repository), and both kernels seem to have solved the
problem. I've managed to do several large transfers of many files,
which was nearly impossible with 2.6.26 kernels. The kerneloops program
reports a lot of kernel failures during these transfers, but
everything continues to work normally anyway.

I'll report back if I start crashing again, but I think it's finally
over. Thanks a lot, kernel team!
