I have a personal package archive in launchpad with the new 1.7 version. Maybe it could save the maintainer some time to grab the files/patches I updated: http://ppa.launchpad.net/medigeek/ubuntu/pool/main/s/smc/
The only thing that needs to be changed is the debian/patches/01_configure.dpatch (attached) Also, for backport reasons, in debian/control I've lowered "Build-Depends" of debhelper (>= 5) and the debian/compat level to 5, seems to work.
