You're missing the line that does the fixup:
    PID=`echo $PID | sed 's/[^0-9]//g'`

I wonder how that came to be?  Did you not accept a change to the init
script on upgrade at some point?  Is it screwed up in the .deb?  Am I
losing my mind?
