I was also bitten by this bug on Debian Lenny with proftpd-mod-ldap 1.3.1-16.
Another possible work around is: LDAPDoAuth on "uid=%v,ou=People,dc=ehost,dc=cz" But it should be fixed to respect documentation: http://www.proftpd.org/docs/directives/linked/config_ref_LDAPSearchScope.html where it is written that subtree is default.
