This is likely to be a hardware problem. Dell is known to
manufacture crap when it comes to ACPI. Please try to disable any
lid-related events in the BIOS and see if you can reproduce the
problem then.

There is no data loss associated with hibernate-ram. The problem is
the hardware locking up when it receives an ACPI event during
a sleep state switch, or in any of the S1 or higher states.
