I've always been annoyed with that port number limitation in debian, and would be happy for a common solution for it. That's also the consensus I read from the thread you refer to: This better be done generally on the system rather than hacked together by each individual package. And most imap-server package seems to agree with me on this. I encourage you to file wishlist bugs against those too. I would also like to be able to install multiple daemons for same port, to avoid downtime. And I would like to upgrade daemons and then restart, instead of stop, then upgrade, then start again. That's just not possible with current packaging infrastructure in Debian. So this is a wish for when Debian supports this generally, not important. Kind regards, - Jonas P.S. Good luck with dovecot. That is my imap server of choice too. I took over maintainance of uw-imap from Jaldhar when he started packaging dovecot.
