I'm pretty sure I had that straight to begin with, but I went ahead and
recompiled both the kernel & the module together (using
kernel-source-2.6.11-7 and "make-kpkg ... modules_image kernel_image")
and I'm still getting:

rt2500: no version for "struct_module" found: kernel tainted.
