Gawk needs for interval-expressions the option "--re-interval", "-W re-interval", "--posix", or -W posix. In gawk-devel (in the CVS-repository on Savannah) one can additionally use the option "-r". The default use of braces in gawk-regular expressions comes from the traditional use of braces in awk.
