That option has no effects. After some more experimentation, however, I
got the testing version of the server to work without acceleration [tried
EXA in Device section before switching acceleration off (NoAccel in Screen
section)].

I needed to install xserver-xorg-video-radeon/experimental,
xserver-xorg/exp., xserver-xorg-core/exp, xserver-xorg-input-kbd/exp to
make apt-get happy. In the config file I added radeon as driver instead
of ati. A server with EXA acceleration would get to the login
screen (kdm), but then no interaction (no mouse, no kbd)
was possible (I also have a clock on
the greeting which did not update). Without acceleration, the clock
updates, but I still cannot get to the system via keyboard (this is
worse than the current situation in testing). Currently, I am back to
testing and 2.6.22.
