The way to work around this is to use utf-8 for communication with the dictionary. Note also that ispell removal after lenny is under consideration, so I recommend you to switch to aspell, by installing it and setting (setq ispell-program-name "aspell") in your .emacs file. If you are using FSF emacs (i.e., not xemacs) just installing aspell-en and selecting british dictionary should make sure that comunication is done in utf-8 (regardless of the encoding of your buffer) and allow you to do the spell-checking. If you are using xemacs you need to put a personal dictionary entry in your .emacs file with the dict encoding set to utf-8. If there are features in ispell that you miss from aspell, please let us know, so we consider them when deciding if ispell is to be removed or not.
