Well, the installer docs do suggest passing vga=771 for machines with display problems. Mostly these seem to be laptops there the vga16fb cuts off part of the screen.
I guess that we could try turing vga=0x301 (ie 769) on, or 771 on by default in unstable now and see what breaks. Don't know enough about it to know which of the two numbers is more likely to work though. -- see shy jo
