As an additional comment, I finally installed madwifi-trunk-current.tar.gz from upstream http://snapshots.madwifi-project.org/ (r3878-20081204 at the time of writing); the modules compile without problem under linux-image-2.6.26-1-686 2.6.26-11 and the link quality is fine again.
