Package: smartmontools
Version: 5.32-3

The Debian Sarge smartctl does not recognize my Hitachi DeskStar SATA
drive, and therefore claims it does not support SMART (which, of course,
it does):

---
poly:~# smartctl -i /dev/sda
smartctl version 5.32 Copyright (C) 2002-4 Bruce Allen
Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/

Device: Version:
Serial number: VNRD3EC4C9YLXM
Device type: disk
Local Time is: Fri Jun 17 06:59:42 2005 PDT
Device does not support SMART
poly:~#
---

The drive seems to be working fine, and Hitachi's Disk Fitness Tester
claims the drive is in good working order.

Configuration:

Abit NF-7S motherboard (Silicon Image 3112 SATA controller)
1 Hitachi 160 Gb DeskStar SATA drive on channel 0.

1 old 4.3 Gb IBM DCAA-34330 PATA drive (Primary Master)
Asus DVD-E616P1 16x ATAPI DVD-ROM drive (Primary slave)
Plextor PX-716A ATAPI Dual-Layer DVD+/RW drive (Secondary master)

The kernel and libc are the ones shipped with Sarge:

poly:~# uname -a
Linux poly 2.6.8-1-386 #1 Thu Nov 25 04:24:08 UTC 2004 i686 GNU/Linux
poly:~# dpkg -s libc6 | grep ^Version
Version: 2.3.2.ds1-22

I poked around in the smartmontools mailing list archive, the Debian bug
database, and the web, but didn't find anything that looked relevant.
