Thanks for the investigation - that's also Emmanuel's problem
(according to his strace, thanks Emmanuel for sending it!).

The default value of follow_outside_symlinks will be back to 'yes', to
avoid this kind of behaviour change (will be part of 0.14~beta3 due
tomorrow).

Ivan, your issue will be resolved, too - if the root directory is a
symlink, MPD shouldn't mind the option follow_outside_symlinks.
