Honestly, no idea, perhaps KDE 4.2 is breaking the recently-used stuff or something from the X env. The test case for you should be: log into GNOME (the default desktop) with the problematic user, open subtitle editor, check if it crashes. Also, if I'm right this subtitleeditor version is a bit old, try with a newer one like 0.30.
