And that's a good thing. The 2 scenarios where root is needed (opening network port below 1024 and realtime priorities) are taken care with the use of vlc-wrapper. It is true that it isn't noted in NEWS but VLC have been outputting warnings when run as root for a long time. So if your use case is not taken care of by vlc-wrapper, please give more details.
