Just to note, Xapian's query parser has a mode specifically for handling this situation - see the "FLAG_PARTIAL" flag in queryparser.h. Feel free to ask in #xapian on irc.freenode.net, or in the xapian-discuss mailing list, if you need assistance with using this.
