I can't agree that Smolt is Fedora-only solution. OpenSUSE adopted this solution as well, and I was able to send profile from OpenSUSE 11.1 Beta easily.
I have learned about http://hardware4linux.info/ just after doing Google search about Smolt and Debian. :-) Hardware4Linux is a nice project, but at a moment there are only ~ 3200 profiles available. And you nee: - register account at http://hardware4linux.info/ and wait about one hour to get login enabled - upload test results manually - answer 5 or 6 questions (does it work or not) on web form I doubt majority of users would have so much time to come through all those steps.
