Okay, I understand a bit better now. The Tab key can't move the focus when it is in the file name edit box; and when there is an existing file selection in the file name listbox (as there is when I don't clear the playlist from previous alsaplayer invocation), the edit box gets the focus automatically to start with. There's a workaround: Alt-P moves the focus to the left pane (the saved "location" listbox); after that, it can be cycled over with Tab. In the days I when I was still coding GUIs, my rule was to provide a direct Alt-<Foo> shortcut for every control (or at least group of controls in cases like radio boxes).
