Another data point that might explain the source of the confusion: the unstable version of gnat-gps (4.3~2008.08.09) FTBFS on alpha; however the version in testing (4.0.1-6lenny1) built successfully on all architectures and has migrated to testing on all architectures except alpha for unknown reasons.
