I'm seeing this too, on lenny/amd64. Hopefully this should be enough info to reproduce:

I installed a fresh copy of lenny using the beta2 network install disc image, and ran an update via the update manager applet from the gnome desktop.

Then I installed tightvncserver and set up gdm to accept xdmcp queries. I run the vnc server with the following command line:

Xvnc :1 -geometry 1240x900 -rfbauth /etc/vncpasswd -depth 24 -query localhost -ac

This gets a gdm login screen, which works flawlessly. I then updated gnome-settings-daemon by rebuilding from the standard source package in order to fix another bug (see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=481191 ).

Following this update, I am able to log in, but keystrokes are assigned to a rather screwy mapping. For example, if I type 'abcdefghij' I get out 'asdfghjkl;', i.e. the home line from my selected keymap (UK 105-key).

Relevant versions (as I'm not sure which package contains the bug):
ii tightvncserver 1.3.9-4 virtual network computing server software ii gdm 2.20.7-4 GNOME Display Manager ii gnome 1:2.22.2~5 The GNOME Desktop Environment, with extra co ii gnome-core 1:2.22.2~5 The GNOME Desktop Environment -- essential c ii gnome-settings-daemon 2.22.2.1-1 GNOME settings daemon
 [n.b. rebuilt from source]
ii libbonoboui2-0 2.22.0-1 The Bonobo UI library ii libglade2-0 1:2.6.2-1 library to load .glade files at runtime ii libgnome2-0 2.20.1.1-1 The GNOME 2 library - runtime files ii libgnomekbd2 2.22.0-1 GNOME library to manage keyboard configuration - shared library ii libgnomeui-0 2.20.1.1-2 The GNOME 2 libraries (User Interface) - runtime files ii libx11-6 2:1.1.5-2 X11 client-side library ii libxi6 2:1.1.3-1 X11 Input extension library ii libxklavier12 3.5-2 X Keyboard Extension high-level API ii libxxf86misc1 1:1.0.1-3 X11 XFree86 miscellaneous extension library

I've included everything that doesn't sound likely to be totally unrelated.

Running a twm session, everything seems to work fine, so it definitely seems to be gnome related.
