I'm seeing this too, on lenny/amd64. Hopefully this should be enough
info to reproduce:
I installed a fresh copy of lenny using the beta2 network install disc
image, and ran an update via the update manager applet from the gnome
desktop.
Then I installed tightvncserver and set up gdm to accept xdmcp queries.
I run the vnc server with the following command line:
Xvnc :1 -geometry 1240x900 -rfbauth /etc/vncpasswd -depth 24 -query
localhost -ac
This gets a gdm login screen, which works flawlessly.
I then updated gnome-settings-daemon by rebuilding from the standard
source package in order to fix another bug (see
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=481191 ).
Following this update, I am able to log in, but keystrokes are assigned
to a rather screwy mapping. For example, if I type 'abcdefghij' I get
out 'asdfghjkl;', i.e. the home line from my selected keymap (UK 105-key).

I've included everything that doesn't sound likely to be totally unrelated.
Running a twm session, everything seems to work fine, so it definitely
seems to be gnome related.
