Maybe you have a wlan0_rename device or similar?  IIRC there were some
changes in 2.6.24 that cause breakage with the
/etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules that etch's udev creates¹.
Some seven months ago I had this problem myself, also on a laptop with
the b43 driver, the solution was to move said file out of the way and
reboot.  See also this Ubuntu bug:

duplicates.

¹ In etch the file is /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules, it is
  automatically renamed on udev upgrades.
